In July 1938, A4 class locomotive No 4468 Mallard set the world speed record for a steam locomotive, travelling at 126mph on the slight downward gradient of Stoke Bank, near Grantham. That record still stands. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway, this streamlined, elegant and powerful design became a symbol of 1930''s luxury. Kevin Walsh''s nostalgic design depicts Mallard on one of its regular journeys from Newcastle to London. Although the scene is imaginary (Riston is not a genuine location), we''re sure that many fathers and sons will have gathered to see this amazing locomotive in action, and proudly add the number 4468 to their list.
