Wasgij Mastery: How to Solve the "Unknown" 🧩
By the Jigsaw Puzzles Direct Expert Team
So, you’ve opened the box, tipped out the pieces, and realised... the picture on the box isn’t what you’re building. Welcome to the wonderful, slightly mad world of Wasgij (that’s "Jigsaw" spelled backwards, in case you hadn't spotted it!).
At Jigsaw Puzzles Direct, we get asked for Wasgij tips more than anything else. Here is our expert guide to mastering the "unknown" without losing your marbles.
1. Identify Your Concept
Before you start organising your board, you need to know how you are supposed to be thinking. Wasgij puzzles fall into five main categories:
- Original: You are the character on the box. You must puzzle what they are seeing right now.
- Destiny: You are a time traveller. You are puzzling what the scene on the box will look like in the future.
- Mystery: You are a detective. You are puzzling what happens in the next few minutes (usually a hilarious disaster!).
- Retro : With Wasgij Retro, you have the chance to rediscover the best loved puzzles from years gone by!
-
Christmas: Similar to Original, but with a festive, seasonal twist.
2. The "Jigsaw Puzzle Direct" Sorting Strategy
Since you can't rely on the box art, your sorting trays are your best friends.
- The Border First (Always!): Even though the image is a mystery, the edge is a fixed rectangle. Find those straight edges and build your frame. It defines your workspace and gives you that first "win."
- Group by "Clue" Colours: Look for distinct patterns that stand out. Is there a specific floral print? A bright red bus? Even if you don't know where it goes, group those textures together.
- The "Faces" Tray: Wasgij puzzles are famous for their hilarious characters. Sort all the eyes, noses, and open mouths into one tray. Faces are often the easiest parts to "cluster" together.
3. Use the "Box Clues" (They Aren't Useless!)
The image on the box isn't what you're building, but it contains "Anchor Points."
-
Static Elements: In a Mystery puzzle, the buildings or background scenery usually stay the same, even if the characters move.
-
Perspective: In an Original puzzle, look at the characters at the very edge of the box art—they might be the ones you are "looking past" in your final image.
4. The "Satisfying Click" Test
Because we only stock premium puzzles at Jigsaw Puzzles Direct, rely on the quality of the fit. If you have to force a piece, it’s probably not right. A genuine high-quality piece will have that "satisfying click" that tells you you’re on the right track.
